Whitemountain were appointed by London Luton Airport Holdings as Principal Contractor in June 2015 to deliver the LOT 1 Landside Civil Engineering works project. The project was procured and is being delivered under the NEC3 Option A form of contract under a Design & Build appointment with a contract value of £17 million.
The landside civil engineering works is designed to improve access, circulation and parking facilities required to support the airport expansion plans and to improve passenger facilities at the airport.
This project includes a pedestrian footbridge with two spans 70m and 35m. The structure is to provide segregation for arriving and departing passengers away from vehicular traffic. The bridge structure has 3 passenger cores consisting of structural steel frame containing pedestrian lifts, pre-stressed landings and stairwells.
Works also includes 2.5km of internal roads and 0.7km of dual carriageway and a new roundabout which was constructed at the front of the terminal building to align with new infrastructure layout. The roundabout construction was phased to minimise disruption, all offline works were completed first, traffic diverted onto the new roundabout and the infill sections completed to provide the circulatory lanes.
Daily traffic flow to the terminal is approximately 25,000 vehicles per day with passenger numbers averaging 55,000. In addition there is a large number of airport operators, retailers and services supply sector traffic increasing the overall vehicle and passenger numbers to be managed
The traffic management is delivered in-house and led by our site based Traffic Safety and Control Officer. The traffic and pedestrian management arrangements are particularly complex on this project and there has been in excess of 30 major changeovers implemented to date.
